Teaching the Duck to Fly in Burbank
In his presentation before the Burbank City Council, Jim Lazar presented ten strategies for teaching the “duck” to fly. Starting with the duck-shaped load profile created by fluctuating renewable energy supplies, Mr. Lazar illustrates how low-carbon strategies utilizing existing technologies can address the load shape of Burbank Water and Power’s requirements as increasing penetrations of wind and solar resources create ramping challenges for conventional generation. These strategies not only enable greater renewable integration, but they also enhance system reliability, and reduce capital and fuel costs by modifying the load profiles.
